Fire Blazes to Victory, 3-1

In the first clash this season between the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution, the intense rivalry continued.  A hard-fought match pitted the speed and power of the Revolution against the suffocating Fire defense.  The Revolution struck first when a long ball came into the heart of the Fire defense, was won with a speedy run, and blasted past a defenseless Cora Sawin.  However, it was the last of those runs upon which the Revolution could capitalize.  Shaking off the early goal, the Fire defense adjusted and forced Revolution shots from distance and difficult angles.

Meanwhile the Fire offense controlled the middle of the field and accurate passing let to a beautiful left-footed equalizer be Kevin Aguilar.  Evan Aigner playing in only his third game, in perfect offensive position, put the Fire ahead for good early in the second half.  Philip Hart was a force on offense as he was always around the goal face pressuring the Revolution defense.  Hart scored on a rebound and would have had another if not for a deliberate Revolution hand ball to prevent the goal in front of the net.

The quality of play by the Fire was unparalleled as defenders stopped transition attempts, midfielders pressured and controlled the ball in all areas of the field, and offensive charges were coordinated with good decision-making, crisp passes, and numerous scoring chances.

The win pushes the Fire record to 3-0 in spite of the intense competition posed by the schedule.  Next Saturday features the Fire at home against the LA Galaxy.  The Fire defeated the Galaxy 2-0 in the first game of the season.
