Dominique Easley to hold inaugural football camp

Dominique Easley never attended a football camp growing up in Staten Island, N.Y. But now, the second-year New England Patriots defensive lineman is about to host one.
“A lot of people would find that odd, but I don’t, just for the simple fact that I’m from New York,” Easley told Dan Roche on WBZ-TV Sunday. “Football isn’t, so-called, known.”

Alongside teammates
Aaron DobsonChandler Jones and Jerod Mayo, Easley will hold his inaugural Champs Camp for children ages 6 through 17 on Sunday, July 25 in Medford, Mass. Together they will handle drills, but the primary goal of the event is a simple one in the eyes of the 2014 first-round pick.

“I just want them to experience something I didn’t get to experience,” Easley said, on the same weekend fellow Patriots
Rob Gronkowski and Brandon LaFell also held camps. “Having the little kids having fun, and just go out there, do a little bit of drills but mostly, more important, have fun.”

Easley’s camp will also have a tent set up to raise awareness for Fibromyalgia, a medical condition that has hit close to home for him after his sister, Destinee, was diagnosed at age 11.

“She’s still going through it today,” Easley said of Destinee, now age 16. “Just two or three weeks ago, she was in the wheelchair, in and out of hospitals, missing school. A lot of people don’t know how serious it is until you actually witness it for yourself.”

He hopes bringing cognizance to the condition will lead to a cure.

The 23-year-old, who played in 11 games for the Patriots as a rookie before being placed on injured reserve with knee soreness in December, also touched on some other matters during his interview with Roche.

On waiting to play football -
“Never played football until high school. It was actually my brother that made me play. He played all through when he was younger. I was too big as a child, so I never really got to play. I had the opportunity in high school, so it just took off after that.”

On his advice to younger football players -
“Have fun, don’t ever let the game itself take you out of having fun playing the sport of football, because that’s the problem now. A lot of people take it too serious and not have fun with it. So, I mean, when you have fun, you do great.”

On head coach
Bill Belichick’s schematic innovation and personality -
“He does everything different, and I would say, in my eyes, at risk. Like, he just does things that you would never normally see somebody do. He’s a jokester when everybody doesn’t really see. He’s a real big jokester, makes us laugh all the time. He just does a lot things that a normal coach wouldn’t do, and that’s what makes him great.”
